Some important voices say this VR cycle is dead. This might be a stretch, considering the installed base of Samsung Gear is more than 8 million. Nevertheless, today’s announcement of the Oculus Go (by Zuckerberg himself, at Oculus Connect 4) is a welcome shot in the arm for virtual reality. The price is right at $199 and it greatly simplifies the whole process of jumping into VR, as it’s self-contained.  No, this won’t be the ultra high-end head-mounted display for the hardcore, as it doesn’t have inside-out tracking or fully tracked motion controllers. Perhaps that will be the Santa Cruz – we’ll see what HTC has in store – but Oculus Go is VR’s biggest step towards the mainstream so far.
